Meal 69 - August 20th - Seared Asian Beef, Best Noodle Salad and Ginger Dressing
I love a good surprise. Like when you find a fiver in your pocket that you didn't know was there. Or when someone brings cake into the office. Today I was not expecting great things from this seared Asian beef meal. The picture made it look like someone had been on a bit of a rampage around a greengrocers and chucked together whatever they could find, along with some noodles and rump steak. There was nothing about it which made me think it would have any wow factor.
Anyway, Lolz had requested "something relatively healthy as I've had lots of cake today" so I gave her the choice between this and the Salsa Verde Tuna. She went for the beef and I went shopping - my basket by the time I reached check out looking like something from a Whole Foods commercial, all fresh and colourful and healthy.
It's ridiculously easy to put together - a frying pan and a chopping board is pretty much all you need. You toast the nuts, fry the steak, chop the salad, mix up the dressing and boom, you have a 15 minute meal. I ended up using a platter as well because my board wasn't big enough to serve it on, but even Lolz commented on how tidy the kitchen was in the aftermath (some stray noodles which ended up in the toaster notwithstanding).
Anyway, as you probably guessed, this meal was a great surprise - anything but boring. The dressing, somehow salty and refreshing at the same time, seems to cling to every bit of lettuce, carrot and noodle to bring it all together. Along with the five spice infused steak it turns a plate of boring salad into something quite spectacular. All in all it's a feast of different textures and flavours on your plate.
Lolz gave the dish a well deserved and thoroughly unexpected 10/10. Difficulty rating 1/10. Seriously, what more could you want from a 15 minute meal - if you have not already cooked this one, then please for the love of god, do it now!
