Meal 41 - May 4th - Sizzling Beef Steak, Hoi Sin Prawn and Noodle Bowls
Ahhh, bank holiday weekend! After a long week of work I can't describe how excited I am about 3 days of lie ins, alcohol, football and of course 15 minute meals. With respect to the latter, we found ourselves watching an episode of the 15 minute meals TV show as we had lunch, featuring this particular recipe. Lolz gave me some nervous looks when she saw that the recipe needed 4 separate pans, but we both agreed it looked sufficiently appetizing to kick off a new month of 15 minute meals! Today is of course also Star Wars Day - time will tell as to whether this particular attempt was out of this world...
Up until now I'd been very careful to stick to the recipe as closely as possible, but, being environmentally conscious and therefore keen to avoid wastage, I should admit that I did make a few slight changes here. We thought the romaine lettuce seemed a bit superfluous and had a fair bit of salad in the fridge so we left that out. Radishes are one of those things that, once we've bought them, always seem to end up sitting in our fridge for ages waiting to get used up, so we decided to leave those out too. Finally, we got some chestnut mushrooms in our last veg box, so decided to use them instead of the oyster ones, given that I probably wouldn't eat them anyway.
In spite of the multiple pan usage, it's incredibly simple to cook. You roast the nuts (Jamie, incidentally, appears to love his nut related double-entendres), fry the steak and mushrooms, stir fry the veg and prawns, and boil the noodles. Then whack it all in a bowl.
I have to say it's one of my favourites so far. We have criticised some previous meals for having too much going on but this, despite on the face of it being rather ingredient heavy, just works. You have a forkful and there's steak and noodles and crunchy peanuts; you take another and there's prawns and beansprouts; another and there's mushrooms. Everythings coated in the thick, intense, spicy sauce.
Lolz gave the dish 9/10. Difficulty rating 1/10. The force is definitely strong with this one...
