Meal 28 - March 23rd - Keralan Veggie Curry, Poppadoms, Rice & Minty Yoghurt
I've been getting pretty good lately at maintaining some degree of order in the kitchen as I cook my 15 minute meals. Occasionally this is at the expense of going very slightly over 15 minutes but I've definitely developed a bit of a technique for minimizing mess. And so I was surprised when, taking a step back to survey the damage and assess the amount and difficulty of washing up that lay in store for Lolz, that the kitchen resembled some kind of bomb site. The picture below I feel does not really do it justice, but the rather large glass of wine is telling.
Anyway it had been quite a long day - I'd had to work in the morning and then had the pleasure of doing some shopping in the snow with Lolz, so definitely felt as if I'd earned a good meal by the time we got home. And so, looking back, it was perhaps a bit surprising that we went for this, a dish that is described as a "light" veggie curry. Lolz also normally takes offence to anythings which combines savoury flavours with sweet (unless it's a cheese and pineapple hedgehog) but happily got on board with the pineapple in this one.
I guess the reason it creates such a mess is that, in addition to there being so many ingredients (unsurprisingly, being of South Indian inspiration, there are lots of spices in the mix), there are basically four separate components to the meal - rice, curry, poppadoms and minty yoghurt - and each requires some effort and therefore creates some mess.
Thankfully, it's all worth it as the end result is rather pleasant. Not mind blowingly sensational, but good - it's chunkier and probably a bit more powerful than the daal curry. I'm looking forward to combining the leftovers with the leftovers of Sunday's roast chicken. Lolz thought it was a bit thin and gave it 8/10. Difficulty rating 6/10 - you have to keep your eye on a few things at the same time.
